Drawing High School Students to STEM Through an Exciting Cyber Competition

Attracting high school students to STEM is an enormous challenge for every high school in America. Drawing students to these challenging fields requires innovation, leadership, adept use of technology, a creative element, and a “spark” that attracts students. The National High School Cyber Defense Competition—CyberPatriot—offers exactly that. Created by the non-profit Air Force Association, it has grown from just eight teams in Florida in 2009 to over 1,200 teams in all 50 states in 2012. Using technology and excitement, students learn about cyber security, how a network works, and how to defend a network against hackers and other vulnerabilities. The competition culminates with the all-expenses paid National Finals Competition in Washington DC each spring.
